Mãos a massa Nome Comercial do Compositor para um Ballet/Hands-On Brand Name Composer For a Ballet

"McCartney riu, e disse: "Dá-me umas semanas."

E eu joguei-o no ballet. "

THE composer, dressed down in denim and Nikes, strolled into rehearsal at the New York City Ballet’s Studio 2 late last month to see for the first time what the choreographer Peter Martins had made of his score, “Ocean’s Kingdom.”

Over the next hour, as the music played from a CD, the 48 dancers portrayed a romance set in a royal undersea court and a magical forest, with nobles, handmaidens and thugs.

There were poised geometric ensembles and bursts of individual acrobatics, a ballroom scene, embraces and battles, even a brief bit of drunken comedy, all clearly telling a story.

Composer and choreographer watched intently, often leaning together to confer in whispers. At the end the composer leaped to his feet with a standing ovation, exclaiming, “Whoo!” That “Whoo!,” high and sweet, could have come straight out of a Beatles song.
Which made sense, because the composer was Paul McCartney, trying his first ballet and being, it turns out, far more hands-on than a typical ballet composer. With “Ocean’s Kingdom” he has taken a part in everything: story, sets, costumes, even elements of the dance itself. As a novice to ballet composing, he approached the project in his own fruitfully naïve way. “The great thing for me was I never worked like this before,” Mr. McCartney said afterward. “One of the reasons I do this is to have new experiences in my life.”

Mr. Martins, the company’s ballet master in chief, said, “Paul obviously has a great ear, but he also has a great eye and many wonderful ideas, so I was happy to use them as his input really enriched my creative process.”
When the run-through ended, Mr. McCartney chatted for a few moments with some of the lead dancers, who earnestly asked him about nuances of their characters and basked in his approval. Mr. McCartney returned to attend the next full week of rehearsals, said Sara Mearns, one of the company’s principal dancers, who plays the central role of the princess Honorata.

City Ballet has often commissioned new ballet scores — Mr. McCartney joins a lineup that includes Wynton Marsalis, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Charles Wuorinen and John Adams — but the composer generally plays a more limited role. Ms. Mearns said Mr. McCartney “was there in all the rehearsals, and he would sit there and watch and he would chime in. He really is a huge part of the process in the ballet, and he really cares a lot about it. This is definitely something new for everybody, to have this kind of energy around a ballet.”

“Ocean’s Kingdom” is the centerpiece of the City Ballet’s season. Its opening, on Sept. 22, is the company’s annual gala. And while the score is remote from rock ’n’ roll, Mr. McCartney’s name and music are likely to draw audiences that are not ballet regulars, whether it’s baby boomers who paid hundreds of dollars to see Mr. McCartney this summer at Yankee Stadium or fashionistas curious about costumes designed by his daughter Stella McCartney.

The production is budgeted at $800,000, said Katherine E. Brown, City Ballet’s executive director. “It’s on the high side, but not really out of proportion for its size and scope,” she said, citing the size of the company, the full orchestra, and the length of the performance. Mr. McCartney “donated his services,” Ms. Brown said, and Ms. McCartney made “her resources available at a very reduced level.”

For City Ballet, Ms. Brown said, “it’s an investment in repertory building and in audience building.” The annual gala, which has previously raised a little over $2 million, has already drawn more than $3.7 million this year. Ticket sales for the production are strong, Ms. Brown said, and it has drawn new donors. “I am really struck at how universal his appeal is,” she said. “And Peter and Paul have a very simpatico kind of artistic relationship.”

“Ocean’s Kingdom” is, in many ways, an old-fashioned story ballet: a tuneful, tonal, orchestral work, in four movements, that accompanies a straightforward tale of love, complete with a princess. Written by Mr. McCartney, it illustrates the adventures of King Ocean’s daughter, Honorata, and the earth royalty who both desire her: King Terra and his brother, Prince Stone. (In true storybook style no one worries about breathing.) Mr. McCartney’s music unfolds through motifs and episodes, not pop verses and choruses; it harks back to Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Holst and Vaughan Williams, with a touch of Gershwin when the tough-guy Terra contingent struts in. In both music and dance, aquatic tranquillity contends with earthy brashness, a divide to be bridged by the lovers.
Mr. McCartney could have simply completed the music and let Mr. Martins and his company do the rest. He didn’t. “I’m used to doing, and being involved in, many elements in the things I do,” he said, the cover art on albums and the placement of a video screen for a stadium concert.
For “Ocean’s Kingdom” Mr. McCartney wrote the entire story line, scene by scene, and made paintings to suggest the backdrop for each act, which will be projections, and the final tableau. Mr. McCartney suggested to his daughter that the costume design include tattoos for the bad guys.
Mr. Martins recalled telling Mr. McCartney: “You’ve done the music, you’ve done the libretto, you’ve done the scenic elements. And Stella’s doing the costumes, and you told her, ‘I want tattoos.’ I said, ‘The only thing you haven’t done is the choreography.’ ”

Mr. McCartney laughed, and said, “Just give me a couple of weeks.”
In fact, Mr. Martins revealed, he incorporated some of Mr. McCartney’s body language into the dance. A signature stance for the ballet’s bad guys — the “Terra punks” — has the right arm raised, elbow bent and fingers splayed, and the left arm outstretched: a “Shazam!” pose. Mr. Martins said, turning to Mr. McCartney, that one day while they were listening to the punks’ music in his office, “You stood up, and you went like this” — he assumed the stance — “and I thought, well that’s a great image. And I threw it in the ballet.”

The collaboration began when Mr. McCartney met Mr. Martins in March 2010 at the School of American Ballet’s annual Winter Ball fund-raiser. Soon afterward, Mr. Martins asked if Mr. McCartney would be interested in writing ballet music. Along with his rock albums, Mr. McCartney has released four classical albums since 1991: two oratorios, a “symphonic poem” called “Standing Stone” and an album of shorter pieces, “Working Classical.” The “Ocean’s Kingdom” score is due for release as a CD (Hear Music/Telarc/Concord) on Oct. 4.

When Mr. Martins approached him, Mr. McCartney had already written a few minutes of rippling, oceanic music for the filmmaker Jacques Perrin; it had gone unused, and he had been thinking of extending it into a larger piece. Now he had a purpose for it, but no guidelines. “Foolishly I didn’t ask,” he said. “I didn’t say, ‘Well, what’s this ballet about, that we are going to do?’ ”

“I thought, what do I know about ballet? What the average Joe knows — ‘Swan Lake,’ ‘Nutcracker Suite.’ Well, I thought there’s no point in me doing that or trying to do that, because it’s been done by Tchaikovsky better than I might ever be able to do it.” While composing the music, he attended a Royal Ballet performance of “Giselle” with an analytical eye and spoke to the dancers afterward; mostly, however, he worked on his own.

He added, “With most things I do, I imagine myself as someone in the audience, so I just thought, ‘Well, what would I like to see?’ ”
Mr. McCartney does not read or write standard music notation. For the past few years he has used a computer program that simulates orchestral instruments. “I find it very addictive, so when I have time off I’ll go in there and just make little pieces and things, ‘cause I enjoy the process,” he said. By summer of 2010 his oceanic fragment had grown to about 50 minutes of music.

Only after he had written the music did Mr. McCartney start considering a story. He went through the piece with an engineer, identifying points in the music that could suggest characters and plot. “It’s either going to be a load of rubbish, or it might start to have a hint of a story,” he said. “O.K., this is somebody beautiful coming in here. This is somebody noble. These are baddies. So I just got it and blocked it out.”

A baby-naming book gave him monikers like Honorata and Stone. “It just kind of organically grew as the music did,” he said. “And I finally thought, well, this just seems like a good enough story.”

It’s an accessible fairy tale with a glimmer of environmentalism. The sea kingdom is serene and elegant; the earth intruders are angular and aggressive. “There was this subplot that I mentioned to Peter that seemed to emerge,” Mr. McCartney said. “It was never mentioned in the ballet, just kind of in the back of our minds, that there’s this ecological thing of the purity of the oceans, the destruction and pollution by the earth people, and who will win.”

“Ocean’s Kingdom” is a rarity in Mr. Martins’s career: a new narrative ballet. Although he has done versions of “Swan Lake” and “Romeo and Juliet,” his work is generally a more abstract response to a composition in the tradition of his predecessor George Balanchine. “That was a challenge for me,” Mr. Martins said. “But it was very well paced, I thought. So that’s why I’m surprised that the narrative didn’t come first.”

Mr. McCartney said that at times Mr. Martins “would say, ‘Listen to this,’ and he would be showing me my own music,” he said. “I knew the king came in at some point during these three minutes, but there it was, it was an exact cue. It was as if Peter had said to me, ‘I need to you to write a king entrance, 10 bars.’ ”

Mr. Martins did offer suggestions on the story: in particular, a lovers’ pas de deux in the third act. “We’re sitting there listening to the music, and Peter said, ‘This is erotic, yes?’ I said well, yeah, sure,” Mr. McCartney recalled. “He really put his interpretation on it. But then I was able to go, ‘Wow, thank you for that.’ Because I think at that point in the ballet we’ve had the elegance, we’ve had the punks, we’ve had the dance, we’ve had the romance, and then at this point of despair, suddenly you get sex, and I thought, that’s a good idea.”

“It’s always a good idea!,” Mr. Martins said, laughing.
Mr. McCartney also revised the music with choreography in mind. “When I first played it to Peter, one of the first things, what he actually did was count the music,” Mr. McCartney said. “The opening, because I hadn’t really written much for dance, the rhythm was 4/4, very straight.” He snapped his fingers, humming the tune. “Then I thought: ‘Oh, O.K., you are going to be counting are you? Well great, I’m going to throw you some stuff then.’ ” He chuckled. “A little 7/8 started to creep in, and 2/4 bars and things, and I knew it would give you something to play with.”
Throughout the collaboration, Mr. McCartney said, “he could see I was having loads of ideas.” He grinned. “I was kind of hoping he wouldn’t say, ‘No, no, that’s O.K., thanks, enough.’ ”

Sir Paul Mccartney - Leis de Direitos Autorais "deve ser prolongada"/Sir Paul Mccartney - Copyright Laws 'Should Be Extended'

British copyright laws should be extended to allow ageing recording artists to claim royalties from their music throughout their lifetime, MPs have said.

A Commons committee warned yesterday that around 7,000 musicians are set to lose royalties for recordings made in the 1950s and 1960s over the next decade, with performers currently subject to a 50-year copyright limit over their work.

Veteran artists Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Cliff Richard would be among those who would benefit if proposals by MPs to extend the limit to at least 70 years were accepted.

A report published yesterday by parliament's culture, media and sport committee argued that artists had a "moral right" to retain ownership of their intellectual property.

MPs also recommended tougher laws to prevent piracy following an 18-month investigation into the impact of new technology, such as the internet, on creative content.

"We have not heard a convincing reason why a composer and his or her heirs should benefit from a term of copyright which extends for lifetime and beyond, but a performer should not," the report concluded.
The call was welcomed by members of the British recording industry, including trade association BPI.

Responding to the report BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor said: "The committee is quite right that the term of copyright should be extended as a matter of fairness to artists.

"There is indeed no convincing argument why recording artists have shorter copyright protection than other creators," he added.

Paul McCartney se casará com Nancy Shevell "eminentemente" no Reino Unido/ Paul McCartney set to marry Nancy Shevell "imminently" in UK wedding

SIR Paul McCartney’s wedding to his American heiress girlfriend Nancy Shevell is “imminent”, friends believe.

AdverThe couple flew in to the UK from New York last week and have been finalising what is expected to be a small family ceremony at the ex-Beatle’s Sussex farmhouse.

Macca, 69, wants to avoid the circus that surrounded his doomed marriage to Heather Mills in 2002 in a huge 17th century Irish castle.

“They will be marrying imminently,” a source said. “They are very excited and almost everything is in place. Friends and family have been put on standby.”

New York-born Nancy, 51, has told pals the wedding was set to go ahead in Britain “after Labor Day”, the annual American bank holiday on the first Monday in September.

Boxes of champagne flutes and stacks of chairs have arrived at the music legend’s 933-acre estate.

The source added: “Nancy would have liked to get married in New York, but she knew an English wedding would make Paul happy.

“In the end they decided to marry in the UK and have a party for all their American friends at their home in the Hamptons later.I don’t think I’ve ever seen a couple so besotted with each other.”

The couple will return to the US for the opening night of the rocker’s debut ballet, Ocean’s Kingdom, but could return for the wedding as early as next month.

They have already selected their rings from the famed Neil Lane jewellers in Los Angeles.

This will be McCartney’s third marriage. First wife Linda died in 1998 of breast cancer. They had three children, Mary, Stella and James, and Sir Paul adopted Linda’s daughter Heather.

In 2002 he married former model Heather Mills, with whom he had a daughter Beatrice in 2003. The relationship ended in a bitter divorce in 2008.

He has been dating Nancy since 2007, and confirmed his engagement in May. Last night Sir Paul’s spokesman declined to comment.

Paul McCartney, legendary singer/songwriter and 14-time GRAMMY winner (as well as Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement and Trustees Award recipient), will be honored as the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year at its 22nd annual benefit gala, it was announced today by Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the MusiCares Foundation and The Recording Academy, and Scott Pascucci, Chair of the MusiCares Foundation Board. Proceeds from the dinner and concert — to be held in Los Angeles during GRAMMY Week on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, two days prior to the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards — will provide essential support for MusiCares, which ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical and personal need.

The legendary performer is being honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year in recognition of his singular creative accomplishments as well as his charitable work, which has included an extraordinary range of philanthropic activities over the years.

"Paul McCartney exemplifies the phrase 'artist/philanthropist,' and his extraordinary career is certainly a testament to the multifaceted power of his creative genius," said Portnow. "The unique talent, dedication and spontaneity he brings to his projects and live performances are unsurpassed, but are equaled by the impressive generosity and commitment he consistently devotes to a range of important charitable causes."

"Paul immediately brings to mind artistic excellence and passion for causes that are dear to him," said Pascucci. "It is very inspiring that one of music's true icons makes philanthropy such a force in his life."

"I've been given a great gift — a life making music — and it's my privilege to try to make the world a better place by giving back," said McCartney. "For more than 20 years, MusiCares has helped so many music people in times of crisis — whether with emergency financial assistance or access to addiction recovery resources — and it is an honor to be recognized as the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year."

The 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year gala will begin with a reception and silent auction offering an exclusive and unparalleled selection of luxury items, VIP experiences and one-of-a-kind celebrity memorabilia for bidding guests. The reception and silent auction will be followed by a dinner, the award presentation and a star-studded tribute concert. The MusiCares Person of the Year tribute ceremony is one of the most prestigious events held during GRAMMY Week. The celebration culminates with the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards at Staples Center on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012. The telecast will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Paul McCartney has been directing the tide of musical history since writing his first song at the age of 14. He changed the world of music forever with the Beatles, whose legendary albums include Abbey Road, Revolver, Help!, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and The Beatles ("The White Album"). McCartney has continued to push boundaries over the last 30 years, first as a solo artist, then with Wings (with albums such as Band On The Run and Wings At The Speed Of Sound) and following that as a solo artist again, with recent highlights including 2007's Memory Almost Full. In 2008 he received high critical acclaim as part of the Fireman, a collaborative project with revered producer Youth, and their Electric Arguments album, which topped Billboard's Independent Albums chart. McCartney is also an accomplished award-winning classical composer. His classical album, Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart), was released in September 2006 and won the Album of the Year Award at the 2007 Classic BRIT Awards, while his first ever ballet, Ocean's Kingdom, will be performed for the first time by the New York City Ballet on Sept. 22, with the release of its score following in October.

McCartney's many distinctions include a special award for Outstanding Contribution to Music at the 2008 BRIT Awards, an MTV Icon Award, multiple GRAMMY Awards, the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, GQ's Man of the Year, and an honorary doctorate of music from Yale University, among others. As he received his diploma, Yale President Richard C. Levin told him, "Your songs awakened a generation, giving a fresh sound to rock and roll, and rhythm and blues. We admire your musical genius and your generous support of worthy causes." He is a freeman of the City of Liverpool and lead patron of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. McCartney was appointed fellow of the Royal College of Music in 1995 by the Prince Of Wales, and in 1996 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music. McCartney is also committed to a number of animal rights and humanitarian charities. He has also participated in several significant benefit concerts, including Live Aid in 1985, the Concert for New York City in 2001 and Live 8 in 2005.

Equally renowned as a live performer as he is a songwriter, McCartney has spent much of the last decade performing sold-out concerts to millions of people all over the world, winning rave reviews along the way. Standout moments in 2003 included his performance to more than 500,000 people outside the Colosseum in Rome and his first show in Red Square, Moscow. In 2004 he gave the Glastonbury Festival its most legendary moment to date, and 2005 saw him making history again as he performed live to the International Space Station to wake up NASA astronauts. McCartney performed a string of secret and surprise gigs in intimate venues in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Paris throughout 2007.

In 2008 McCartney performed a series of special event concerts. He started by headlining the Liverpool Sound concert at Anfield Stadium, and then gave the Ukraine its largest-ever outdoor music event in Kiev with more than 400,000 people lining the street to watch his Independence Concert. He found time to join Billy Joel onstage for the Last Play at Shea show in July, marking the last concert at New York's famous Shea Stadium, and then travelled to the city of Quebec for yet another huge headline-making event as he performed to 300,000 people in the city's national park, the Plains of Abraham, to help celebrate Quebec's 400th anniversary. In September McCartney played his Friendship First concert in Tel Aviv, marking his first visit to Israel since the Beatles were banned from performing there at the height of Beatlemania in the '60s.

McCartney kicked off 2009 by teaming with Dave Grohl to perform "I Saw Her Standing There" at the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards, where he was nominated for two awards, adding to his lifetime total of 71 GRAMMY nominations. McCartney embarked on a five-week tour of the United States, which began with an inaugural run of shows at New York's Citi Field — the site of the former Shea Stadium where the Beatles made history in 1965 when they played a concert that set the precedent for the modern-day stadium rock show. These shows were immortalized on a special CD/DVD package, Good Evening New York City. In October McCartney announced a special eight-date European tour in December, titled Good Evening Europe. The tour began in Hamburg, Germany, a place that McCartney originally visited with the Beatles almost 50 years before, putting it on the map as a musical mecca. The tour came to a memorable finale at the O2 arena in London, his only UK show of 2009.

McCartney's Up And Coming Tour kicked off in March 2010 in Phoenix, featuring 35 shows — including two sold-out dates at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Last year also saw many career firsts for McCartney, including performing at the White House in front of the President as the first-ever British recipient of the prestigious Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Paul was joined by a star-studded cast of musicians who came along to pay tribute, including Elvis Costello, Grohl and Stevie Wonder. President Obama addressed the assembled VIP guests and dignitaries in the East Room, telling them that Paul's "gifts have touched billions of lives" and thanking "the Englishman who shared his dreams with us." He returned to the White House again in December to be awarded at the 33rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors, with the president joking that McCartney was becoming something of a regular there.

McCartney's 2011 live agenda began with his first-ever show in Peru, and two blockbuster shows at Rio de Janeiro's Estádio Olimpico João Havelange, which also resulted in the first-ever concert to be broadcast live on the Internet throughout Latin America — allowing more than 1.5 million online fans tickets to share in the show's magic. McCartney's current On The Run tour kicked off with New York's music event of the summer: two historic sold-out July shows at Yankee Stadium that kept approximately 90,000 fans singing along for nearly three hours each night and generated possibly the most enthusiastic reviews ever penned by the local media.

James Louis McCartney

James Louis McCartney (born 12 September 1977) is a British musician, songwriter and sculptor, living in London. He is the only son of songwriter and former Beatle Paul McCartney and Paul's first wife, rock photographer and animal rights activist Linda McCartney.

McCartney was born in London. He was named after both his paternal grandfather
Jim McCartney and his father, whose birth name is James Paul McCartney, as well as Linda's late mother, heiress Louise Linder Eastman. He spent the first two and a half years of his life on the road while his parents toured with their band Wings. After the band broke up in 1980, the McCartney family settled in Rye, East Sussex. He attended the local state secondary school, the Thomas Peacocke Community College. In 1989, McCartney, with his older sisters Mary McCartney and Stella McCartney
, again joined Paul and Linda on a world tour. He continued his education with a tutor while on the road.

In 1993, while celebrating his sixteenth birthday, James and friends went out to swim in the sea. When the weather began to turn bad, the current carried him offshore. His family rushed to the site, and were able to see McCartney return to shore safely.

On 17 April 1998, in
Tucson, Arizona, James, along with his father and sisters, was at his mother's side when she died from breast cancer, which had been diagnosed in 1995. Later that year, McCartney graduated from Bexhill College, near his home in East Sussex, where he pursued studies in A Level
Art.

James appeared in support of his sister Stella at her 1999 fashion show, her first show following the death of their mother, seated in their mother's place next to Paul.

In 1995, James introduced his sister Mary to television producer
Alistair Donald, whom she would later marry. James has five nephews and two nieces: Mary's three sons Arthur Alistair Donald (born 3 April 1999), Elliot Donald (born 1 August 2002), and Sam Aboud (born 11 August 2008); Stella's son Miller Alasdhair James Willis (born 25 February 2005), her daughter Bailey Linda Olwyn Willis (born 8 December 2006), son Beckett Robert Lee Willis (born 8 January 2008) and daughter, Reiley Dilys Stella Willis (born on 23 November 2010). Like his older half-sister Heather McCartney, James lives a relatively private life, unlike his sisters Stella, a fashion designer, and Mary, a photographer. James has a muchyounger half-sister, Beatrice Milly McCartney, born in 2003 to Paul and his second wife Heather Mills.

Beatles '1' N° 1- Novamente/Beatles ‘1’ is No. 1 – again

Beatlemania never really dies, does it?The Beatles album “1,” a collection of the Fab Four’s No. 1 hits that spent eight weeks as the nation’s No. 1 album in 2000 – and was the top-selling CD of the 2000-09 – premiered on iTunes Tuesday.

You won’t need eight days a week to predict where it debuted. Yep, in the top spot.

And not just in the United States. “1” also hit No. 1 in Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Mexico, Sweden, Spain, New Zealand and Greece, according to a press release from Capitol/EMI. Not bad for an album of songs that are already available on iTunes, thanks to the release of the Beatles’ entire catalog two years ago.

Indeed, the Beatles have proven to be among iTunes’ biggest artists, along with such upstarts as Adele, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Lil Wayne. Worldwide, the band – which broke up more than 40 years ago – has sold more than 9 million songs and 1.5 million albums on the downloading service.

Leading the hit parade is nothing new for the Beatles. Over the course of the band’s career, the Liverpudlians had 20 songs and 19 albums hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts – including such post-breakup records as “1967-70” (the “Blue” album), all three “Anthology” CDs and, of course, “1.”

Artists will be paying tribute to John, Paul, George and Ringo over the next couple weeks, thanks to a Twitter hashtag - #MyBeatles1 – with which such folks as Coldplay and Foo Fighters will tweet about their favorite Beatles No. 1 single.

In a tweet released by the label to CNN.com, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl cast his vote for “Hey Jude”: "Perhaps the greatest rock and roll anthem of all time. The one song that I'd send into space to help the aliens understand the human race.”

Coldplay went with “Something”: “Our favourite Beatles song is ‘Something.’ Because just when you thought Lennon and McCartney couldn't get any better, Harrison comes along and writes the best song of the lot.”

What’s toppermost of the poppermost on your Beatles chart?

Os Beatles na Target/The Beatles at Target

*Apple Corps

The Beatles at Target

Os conjuntos t-shirt/singles de vinil, que saíram domingo, o single de 45 RPM "Help!", "Let It Be", "Hello, Goodbye" e "Can't Buy Me Love".

"Can't Buy Me Love", diz "John, Paul, George e Ringo" em uma camiseta vermelha. "Hello, Goodbye" e "Let It Be" tem fotos dos membros do grupo.

It looks like the holiday buying season has begun to show itself a little early. Walk into your local Target store you may suddenly find yourself looking at new Beatles items being sold exclusively by the chain.
  • See the slideshow for the new Beatles items at Target
First are the box sets featuring t-shirts and vinyl singles with picture sleeves (remember them?). The t-shirt/vinyl singles sets, which reportedly started appearing Sunday, feature the 45 RPM singles "Help!," "Let It Be," "Hello, Goodbye" and "Can't Buy Me Love." All the vinyl singles feature Capitol Records labels, except for the "Let It Be" single, which features an Apple Records label. The singles look like the original issues except for the fact that Sony/ATV is listed as the music publisher. The picture sleeves are also thicker than the ones that originally were issued back in the day.
The t-shirts don't match up with the picture sleeve covers and have different designs. "Help!" says "The Beatles" on a blue shirt. "Can't Buy Me Love" says "John, Paul, George and Ringo" on a light red shirt. "Hello Goodbye" and "Let It Be" have shots of the group members. The "Let It Be" shirt photo is the same photo used in the Apple iTunes ads. The shirts are available in two sizes S/M and L/XL.

Cartas de John Lennon serão publicadas/ John Lennon letters to be published

Yoko Ono gives permission for first collection of late Beatle's correspondence to be printed

John Lennon's previously unpublished letters will finally appear in print. Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow, has agreed to help compile a collection of the singer's correspondence, including postcards and doodles, to be published in October 2012.

This is the first time that Ono has consented to publish his letters. The anthology will be edited by Hunter Davies, the official Beatles biographer, using Ono's archive and letters from private collections. But Davies is aware that Lennon had many unknown pen pals over the years, fans or early friends whose correspondence with the singer is packed away in boxes. Anyone who has Lennon letters to share may contact the editor at johnlennonletters@hotmail.co.uk.

As the book's publisher points out, Lennon never sent an email. "Pen and ink were his medium," Little, Brown explained. "John wrote letters and postcards all of his life; to his friends, family, strangers, newspapers, organisations, lawyers and the laundry – most of which were funny, informative, campaigning, wise, mad, poetic, anguished and sometimes heartbreaking."

The Lennon Letters will be printed in chronological order "so that a narrative builds up", and many will be reproduced exactly "in [Lennon's] handwriting or typing, plus the odd cartoon or doodle". Davies has tracked down about 200 letters and postcards so far.

In 2003, a missive from Lennon to an art critic at the Syracuse Post-Standard sold for
more than $38,000 (£23,243). "Society only likes dead artists," Lennon wrote in the letter. "I'm afraid Yoko and myself cannot oblige.
