Liverpool: Escolas dos Beatles
Liverpool: Beatle Schools

Dovedale

John and George each attended (three years apart) the Dovedale Infant School and the adjoining Dovedale Junior Boys School. Dovedale Road intersects with Penny Lane a few blocks from Dovedale School. Ringo attended St. Silas Primary School across the street from his home in the Dingle before moving to Dingle Vale Secondary School, where he spent a few fitful years (in-between lengthy hospital stays) before leaving school for good at fifteen.

At the age of eleven (after passing their "eleven-plus" exams), John moved to the Quarry Bank Grammar School on Harthill Road (across from the Liverpool Botanical Gardens) while Paul and George were both accepted into the rather prestigious Liverpool Institute, on Mount Street near the Anglican Cathedral that dominates the city's skyline. Quarry Bank and the Liverpool Institute were roughly the equivalent of American Junior High and High School. While at Quarry Bank, John developed a well-earned reputation as a troublemaker and formed The Quarrymen, his first group. Paul recently played a major role in re-opening the Liverpool Institute as a "Fame"-style school for the performing arts.

John began attending Art College in 1957 while Paul and George were still at the neighboring Liverpool Institute (the Art College faces Hope Street at the corner of Mount and Hope, and backs into the Liverpool Institute), making for easy meetings and impromptu rehearsals after school and while cutting class. John met Stu Sutcliffe--his best friend and Beatle bass player--at Art College, as well as his future wife, Cynthia Powell.

John Lennon Museum

How I Won The War.

Up until 2010, Japan was the home of the first John Lennon museum to be officially authorized by Yoko Ono. Housed inside the Saitama Super Arena, the 1,500-square-meter museum opened on October 9, 2000, the 60th anniversary of Lennon’s birth. It closed on September 30, 2010, when its exhibit contract with Yoko Ono expired. Over its 10-year existence, a total of about 610,000 visitors came to visit the museum.

The museum housed all kinds of musical instruments, clothes, and music and lyrics from all periods of Lennon’s life; about 135 items were obtained from Yoko Ono for display. The paths took you around nine different zones from “Childhood Memories” to “The Beatles” and “Love and Peace” and finally to “Household Husband.”

The museum did an excellent job of showcasing various notes and scribbles done by John Lennon. It felt very intimate to see working drafts of songs that would later become such international favorites, to note the words the Lennon had second thoughts about or last-minute changes in songs.

Several iconic pieces were also on display, such as Lennon’s famous white piano

They also exhibited a pair of his iconic glasses, which became associated with Lennon after he wore them in the film How I Won The War.

The final room of the museum was a space for solemn reflection—not necessarily on the sadness of Lennon’s death, but on all the challenges faced by the world, including those such as war that Lennon railed against during his lifetime.

Penny Lane

http://hangout.altsounds.com

John spent the first fours years of his life at 9 Newcastle Road, near the Penny Lane roundabout--a busy intersection where five roads meet in a traffic circle. There is still a "shelter in the middle of a roundabout" and a barber shop and a bank. Paul was once a choirboy at St. Barnabas Church, which faces the roundabout, and the Quarrymen played several times at the St. Barnabas Church Hall. The bustling shopping area and bus terminus was relatively near to John and Paul's adolescent homes as well, and it clearly held many happy memories for them both. The original lyrics to John's "In My Life" refer to Penny Lane, though it was Paul's song that immortalized the area. Cynthia (Powell) Lennon had an apartment near Penny Lane and worked at the Woolworth's store a block from the roundabout, where she was often visited by John (and where she went into labor with Julian).
